In his rush to the center, Obama may have already overshot the mark. Today AP reports that Obama will seek to expand Bush’s faith based initiative. Faith based programs play an important role in supplementing government in providing for the social and welfare needs of our country. However, while Obama claims he does not support requiring religious tests for recipients of aid nor using federal money to proselytize, it is a slippery and subtle slope.
Once again, the first amendment is in jeopardy. I would rather defend Wright and Hagee than see govenrment become entangled in religion, even to the extent that would be required to verify whether funds granted to religious organization were not used for improper purposes.
